iFone in Mexican stand-off against iPhone

Mexico’s Supreme Court has ruled that iFone, a local telecoms services company, is making proper use of its brand and that Apple has no grounds for complaint.
According to a Dow Jones report, the ruling could pave the way for iFone to claim damages against the Cupertino giant for brand infringement and perhaps local mobile operators as well.
The dispute between Apple and the Mexican firm dates back to 2009. That’s when Apple tried to register the iPhone brand in Mexico only to be rebuffed by the country’s Industrial Property Institute, saying the name had already been snapped up by iFone.
Apple, claiming that iFone’s right to the brand should be revoked because it was not in proper use, previously tried to sue the Mexican outfit. However, a federal court found that the local firm – registered as Ifone SA in 2003 – had legitimate claims on the brand.
This week’s Supreme Court ruling, reports Dow Jones, was a rejection of Apple’s appeal against the federal court’s decision.
iFone’s case against Apple is not entirely clear-cut, since the iFone brand covers telecoms services and not devices. Apple, says the report, is still believed to hold a valid trademark for the iPhone when applied to a device (rather than a service).
Nevertheless, the latest court ruling might increase the chances of a successful damages claim by iFone against Apple. Eduardo Gallastegui, iFone’s lawyer, reports Dow Jones, says compensation could be as much as 40 per cent of iPhone profits in Mexico.
The lawyer reportedly has Mexico’s three mobile operators – Telcel (owned by America Movil), Telefonica and Grupo Iusacell – also in his sights for compensation. For their part, Mexico’s operators maintain that the dispute is between iFone and Apple.

Microsoft to end WP8, 7.8 support in H2 2014

Microsoft will stop supporting Windows Phone 7.8 and 8 by the second half of 2014.
The company posted a table on its site outlining its support plans for the different versions of its OS, with Windows Phone 8 support ending on 8 July 2014 and WP7.8 getting until 9 September of the same year.
The timetable means each OS gets 18 months of support from launch. In that timeframe, most users of phones with the OS will be eligible for a handset upgrade.
Microsoft launched a new SDK for Windows Phone 7.8 in January but has provided little detail on when the platform will be available to existing Windows Phone device owners.
The upgrade to the 7.5 Mango version of Windows Phone is aimed at making the OS more closely resemble Windows Phone 8 with the addition of Live Tiles. However, it is only available on new devices.

Samsung to launch Tizen device in August/September 2013

Samsung plans to launch a high-end smartphone powered by the open source Tizen mobile platform in August or September this year, reportsBloomberg.
“The Tizen phone will be out in August or September, and this will be in the high-end category. The device will be the best product equipped with the best specifications,” said executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business, Lee Young Hee, during an interview in Seoul.
Samsung is one of 12 companies developing Tizen as an alternative to Android. The South Korean tech giant, along with operators Orange and Docomo, said last month that they plan to “commercialise Tizen devices in the second half of 2013”.
The Tizen 2.0 Magnolia SDK and source code was released to developers, operators and OEMs last month.
The largest smartphone manufacturer in the world in terms of shipments, Samsung launched its current smartphone flagship, the Galaxy S4, in New York yesterday.
Smartphones using Android made up 96 per cent of Samsung’s shipments in the third quarter of 2012, according data from Bloomberg Industries.

Exploding BOM for Samsung Galaxy S4

The HSPA+ version of Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 smartphone carries a much higher bill of materials (BOM) than both its predecessor and Apple’s iPhone 5.
According to analytics company IHS iSuppli, the HSPA+ 16GB version of the new Samsung device has a BOM of $236. Add in the manufacturing costs and it rises to $244. That’s 15 per cent higher than the Galaxy Samsung III and 17 per cent more than the iPhone 5.
The higher BOM costs, say IHS, are due to major upgrades in the display, sensors and application processor, as well as the supporting memory.
The BOM conclusions are drawn from a virtual teardown conducted by the analytics company. They are based on a combination of information and device specifications released by Samsung, along with information regarding known components and suppliers.
“Although its hardware is not radically different from the Galaxy S III introduced in April 2012, the Samsung Galaxy S4 includes some critical component updates that enhance its functionality as well as its BOM cost,” said Vincent Leung, senior analyst for cost benchmarking at IHS.
“Among the upgrades are a larger, full high-definition (HD) display; a beefed-up Samsung processor; and a wealth of new sensors that set a record high for the number of such devices in a smartphone design. And despite the larger display and other changes, the Galaxy S4 has roughly the same width and the same ease of handling as the Galaxy S III.”
The S4’s HD display and touchscreen subsystem is estimated to carry a cost of $75, up from $65 for the S III. This represents the single largest area of cost increase for the S4 compared to the S III.
IHS estimates that Samsung accounts for at least $149 worth of component content in the HSPA+ version of the Galaxy S4, which represents 63 per cent of the total BOM.
Intel is believed to be the supplier of the baseband processor and RF transceiver in the HSPA+ version of the Galaxy S4 (as it was for Galaxy S III), while Broadcom, says IHS, is the likely source for the wireless LAN/Bluetooth/FM/GPS subsystem and the GPS/GLONASS section in the non-Qualcomm variant of the Galaxy S4.
IHS emphasised that the BOM estimates are preliminary until it does a physical teardown of the device.

Samsung even doubled the speed compared to the Apple’s iPhone 5. Samsung scored in this benchmark test 3163 points. Where the HTC One has scored 2687 points and the iPhone 5 has scored 1596 points. We have to see the fight between all these devices in real life. The iPhone 5 uses a dual-core processor and the HTC One and Galaxy S 4 uses a quad-core processor. Samsung Galaxy Y Plus with Android 4.0 surfaces on company website

The Samsung India website has now listed a new Android phone dubbed as the Galaxy Y Plus GT-S5303. No pricing or availability details are known. The specs, however, point towards an entry-level phone.

Measuring in at 104.9 x 57.9 x 12.98mm and weighing 96 grams, the Galaxy Y Plus sports a 2.8 inch TFT QVGA (240x320 pixels) display and runs on Android 4.0. it also comes with a 2-megapixel rear camera.

Amidst all the hype surrounding its high-end devices and mid-range to some extent, Samsung seemed to have lost focus on its low end segment, where it used to launch devices more aggressively. But this could be slowly turning around.

Samsung currently has budget offerings mostly in the Galaxy series. Some of these include Galaxy Pocket (Review I Pictures) launched in April 2012, Galaxy Chat, Galaxy Music Duos and Galaxy Y Pro Duos (Review I Pictures) amongst many others. Mid-range devices from the company include devices like the recently announced Galaxy Fame and Galaxy Young.

The Galaxy Pocket is likely to get a successor in the form of the Pocket Plus. The full specs of the device emerged earlier in January this year, which showed that it is identical to the Galaxy Pocket except for the processor that seems to have been updated to a 850MHz Broadcom.  A more recent report indicated the existence of the Pocket Neo that could witness a May 2013 launch.

The Samsung Galaxy Pocket Neo will have a 3.0-inch screen with QVGA resolution. The expected dimensions of this smartphone are 104.95 X 57.8 X11.8mm. Other alleged specifications for the smartphone include 2-megapixel rear camera, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and A-GPS. The device is likely to available in two variants, a single SIM version, which will bear the model number GT-S5310 and the DUOS variant, under the model number GT-S5312.

HTC announces Developer Edition of HTC One for $649 with SIM and Bootloader unlocked

HTC is getting into the Developer Edition trend -- a compromise necessary since CEO Peter Chou's plan to stop locking bootloaders entirely didn't stick -- as it's announced tonight that a variant of its new One that will be available with both SIM and bootloader unlocked. Due to arrive in the US at the same time as the standard carrier versions, it will keep the same powerful specs and slick design (no, the case is not transparent) we loved in our review, but without the restrictions. One thing it's missing? AWS HSPA/WCDMA access, which should limit its opportunities on T-Mobile until it rolls out LTE service. The price is $649 up front and it will ship in "limited quantities," so we'd figure that's just one more thing to keep in mind before the next Galaxy S is announced on Thursday.
Only buyers with a U.S. zip code can purchase the HTC One Developer Edition, which is being produced in limited quantity. Outside of the unlocked bootloader and SIM, this is the same phone that your buddy down the street will pay a lot less for, on contract. If you plan on building apps for the phone or you are going to be tinkering the heck out of it, you might find it useful. Otherwise, the regular carrier version should suit your needs.

galaxy s4 Duos Video leaks before galaxy s4

Yesterday leaked Galaxy S IV DUOS showed up on Youtube. The video shows the full device.  If this is the Galaxy S IV Samsung Failed this time to protect the Galaxy S IV. According to our insider is the original Galaxy S IV similiar to the Galaxy S IV DUOS.
The video reveal that the device features a 5″ Full HD AMOLED display, an Exynos Octa 5410 CPU, PowerVR SGX 544MP GPU and 2GB of RAM. The device is also running Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean. It looks like the sides of the device are made out of aluminium, as we reported earlier, and the back is made from a plastic material.
Samsung will annouce the Galaxy S IV this week on March 14th in New York City!

Samsung galaxy s4 offcial image (teaser)

With just two days left for the launch of one of the most anticipated smartphones of the year, the Samsung Galaxy S4, the leaks and teasers continue to pour-in and this time, a new image has been released by Samsung itself. The Twitter account of Samsung Mobile US has posted a new image showing the outline of what is most probably the Samsung Galaxy S4.

The Tweet sent out along with the image reads,

The countdown for #TheNextBigThing has begun. Who’s ready for the Global Unpacked Event on March 14?
The official teaser image posted by Samsung resembles the leaked images which we got yesterday, thanks to the Chinese forum 52Samsung.com. With the recent leaks and now, the official  teaser image, it is almost confirmed that all the rumors regarding the display of the Galaxy S4 are indeed true and it will sport a 4.99-inch 1080p screen.

We have some strong rumors about the internals of the device as well, and the credit goes to all the leaked benchmark scores we have got till date. The Galaxy S4 will come with a 1.8GHz processor, which might well be the all-new Exynos Octa 5410 CPU along with 2GB of RAM. The galaxy S4 is expected to sport a 13MP primary camera and a 2MP front-facing camera. To enhance the graphic abilities of the smartphone, it will come with the PowerVR SGX 544MP graphics processor.

Samsung is believed to have focused a lot on the software front as well and the new Galaxy S4 is rumored to come with the ‘Eye Scrolling’ feature, with the help of which, the Galaxy S4 would be able to monitor a user’s eyes to determine where to scroll. For instance, while reading text on the smartphone, whenever the user reaches the bottom of the page, the Eye Scrolling feature would detect the gesture and automatically move to the next page

As far as the overall design of the smartphone is concerned, it looks similar to the Galaxy S III, but if real, the GS IV will sport aluminum around the sides. However, all the rumors and speculations would be laid to rest in  just 2 days from now, when Samsung officially unveils the Galaxy S4.

Galaxy s4 IV images and other things leaked

Chinese forum has published plethora of pictures of the Samsung Galaxy S IV Duos GT-I9502. These are the first ever leaked images of the Galaxy S IV, but keep in mind that these images could be of a prototype of the device. Last year, Samsung produced 3-4 different prototypes of the Galaxy S III and then gave them to their partners for testing purposes but at the launch itself the device looked entirely different. We do know that there are almost 4-5 different prototypes of the Galaxy S IV all around the world, this could be one of them.
The images reveal that the device features a 5″ Full HD AMOLED display, an Exynos Octa 5410 CPU, PowerVR SGX 544MP GPU and 2GB of RAM. The device is also running Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean. It looks like the sides of the device are made out of aluminium and the back is made from a plastic material.
Well but we are not sure that even Galaxy s4 may look so

HTC One vs. Samsung Galaxy S4: First Big Smartphone Battle of 2013 Read more at http://global.christianpost.com/news/htc-one-vs-samsung galaxy s4 first big smartphone battle 2013

The HTC One vs. the Samsung Galaxy S4 will be the first significant smartphone battle of 2013.

The HTC One, announced in February is an impressive device that comes with new "ultrapixel" camera technology, a high grade aluminum body, a 1.7GHz quad-core processor, a 4.7-inch 1080p display, and the latest version of Android.
The Galaxy S4's official specifications have been all but confirmed officially by Samsung. However, they are sure to be impressive.
Rumors point to the Galaxy S4 being slightly bigger than the HTC One with a 4.99-inch screen. It will also utilize a PHOLED display which is said to be an improved version of the AMOLED screen found on many of Samsung's successful devices including the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2.
Other rumored specs for the Galaxy S4 include a quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, a 13-megapixel rear camera, 2GB RAM, and will come in three different memory capacities with 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models set to launch later this year.
What processor will be used to power the Galaxy S4 is still up in the air at this point as different publications are either reporting that it will come with the Snapdragon S4, or Samsung's new Exynos 5 Octa-core chip.

Based on its hardware alone, the Samsung Galaxy S4 will be in a different league. And even with its special enhancements to the HTC One's camera system, the Galaxy S4 will still have an advantage with its rumored features such as "Eye Scroll," and "Floating Touch."
A Samsung employee recently told The New York Times that the company hopes to set its smartphone apart from the pack with its software features and not depend on hardware.
If this competition was based solely on hardware alone, the Galaxy S4 would win, but features will become the deciding factor once the Galaxy S4 is released.

Specs And Feature Comparison Between Samsung Galaxy S4 And Apple iPhone 5S

Rumor mills working overtime speculating, if it will be Samsung Galaxy S4 or Apple iPhone 5s leading the pack. No better joy to a reader then to read speculative analysis on forthcoming phone releases by; Apple and Samsung. Both the companies are keeping a tight lid on features and looks of their next phone releases thus fueling the rumor mills to work in overtime mode. There is no official peek from either on them on the phone features. Apple is used to the frenzied response for their new releases as they offer something new and interesting with their releases, but they have been left to taste dust by the flutter created by Samsung’s most awaited Galaxy S4 release.

Samsung is supposedly launching Galaxy S4 with 4.99 inch AMOLED FullHD resolution screen, straight ace as it is will be the first phone with 1080p screen rivaling FullHD LCD screens. Apple has to decide, whether to stick to 4 inch display like predecessor or come up with 5 inch version, we would have to wait to confirm it.

Both phones will run different OS; sticking to their trend, Apple should launch iPhone with iOS7 while Samsung will partner Google again and is expected to launch with Android 4.2 aka Jelly Bean. If it is software’s deciding the race then it is going to be a close one.

Both phones are rumored to pack a punch when it come to processor and inbuilt memory. Galaxy S4 is rumored to come equipped with Exynos 5 Octa (8-Core) chip, recently unveiled by Samsung. It has ARM Cortex-A15 chip with 2GHz speed. Apple will give a fierce fight with its own 2 GHz processor with A7 or A6x chipset. Interestingly, Samsung is packing 2GB memory it is a waiting game to see is Apple will follow suit. Both phones are rumored to go with current trends and pack the phones with 13 Megapixel rear cameras.

Yet to be launched still they are getting speculative bites, will they come good on features and specifications is yet to seen.

The Galaxy S4 is understood to have eye control, whereby users will be able to scroll around apps and websites, as well as pause video by moving their eyes

Mobile phone users will be able to scroll around apps and websites using only their eyes, thanks to a new feature set to be unveiled by Samsung this week.

Samsung's hotly anticipated update to the Galaxy S3 will be unveiled on Wednesday 13 March in New York, and reports suggest the S4's top new feature will be eye control.

The S3, the only mobile to outsell the iPhone, already has a feature called Smart Stay that detects if users are looking at the screen.

The Smart Scroll feature on the new flagship Galaxy device will take this a step further.

A camera tracks the gaze, which in existing Galaxy phones is already used to stop the screen going dark while pages are being read, and to adjust the picture to the viewer's line of sight. Trademarks called "eye scroll" and "eye pause" were registered by Samsung in Europe in January, suggesting the new functions.

An image tweeted by the South Korean company invited fans to come to New York's Times Square, where the Galaxy S4 press conference will be streamed live on Wednesday, and samples of the smartphone will be available to try out afterwards.

A huge marketing and advertising campaign is expected to accompany the new phone. Samsung Electronics' marketing spend of £3.3 billion-a-year dwarfs that of many rival companies, including Apple, Microsoft, and bigger names such as Coca-Cola.

The battle between the top two heavyweight tech companies has been fierce, and since the release of the iPhone 5, Apple regained the number one slot.

But with the release of the Samsung Galaxy S4, many analysts believe the Samsung device will be the biggest seller when it hits the shops in a few weeks' time.

"Apple is not the one leading the market," said Francisco Jeronimo from analysis firm IDC. "I wouldn't be surprised if the new Samsung device sells more than the new Apple device over the next two years."

The latest model is understood to have a 5in display, 13 megapixel camera and even an eight-core processor - today's most advanced phones have four cores in their silicon chips. This means the S4 should have a bigger screen, take crisper pictures and process web pages faster than the iPhone 5, as well as a longer battery life.

Samsung has "enormous" plans for the handset, according to Peter Misek at Jefferies bank, with orders for 100 million in its first nine months. By comparison, Apple's bestselling phone to date, the 4S, took 15 months to ship 110 million units by the end of December.

Samsung S series and plastic

Since the first Galaxy S product, the build quality of Samsung products is a hot item. Many customers blame Samsung about the cheap plastic feeling of their premium high-range line. Yesterday, Cnet had a conversation with Mr. Y.H. Lee, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business. He explained why Samsung uses plastic in their smartphones. One of the reasons that Samsung uses plastic in their smartphones is because of the time-limit. Samsung expect more and more sales every year which simply means more premium builds like on the new HTC One or the Apple iPhone takes too much time. For brands like Apple and HTC, they are able to do this because they produce a low amount of smartphones than Samsung. The Galaxy S III’s plastic glossy back gives a cheap look, in our opinion, but when you hold the device it feels solid and nice. We do understand people want a better build quality from Samsung but this not possible.

Mr Lee didn’t mention anything about the Galaxy S IV but he did said that Samsung will still use plastic in future products. He even said the feeling of their new high-range products are great. So probably the Galaxy S IV will use plastic. Earlier, SamMobile reported about the Galaxy S IV’s build quality. Glass on the front, aluminium on the sides and plastic on the back. Now we have to say the ATIV S, Samsung’s latest High-end smartphone, feels great in the hand even better than the Galaxy S III. We are not that worried about the plastic back.

Yes Samsung uses plastic and yes we don’t like it but Samsung improved the quality of their plastic a lot since the first Galaxy S. Let’s hope Samsung does the same this time with the Galaxy S IV.

Galaxy S IV to use Qi wireless charging technology

Samsung is going to use Qi wireless charging technology to charge mobile devices. According to digitmes, The galaxy S IV will use this kind of technology.
. The Galaxy S IV can be wireless chargeable by a special back cover and of course the charging dock. Samsung is expected to sell the dock directly after the first sales of the Galaxy S IV. Wireless charging is one of the big things for 2013, in our eyes. Many OEMs have started to use Qi wireless charging technology.

So far we have told you about the new floating touch technology and the “Green PHOLED” display but we aren’t finished yet! Lets confirm some more things about the Galaxy S IV. Our insider was able to confirm that the Galaxy S IV will run Android 4.2.1 out of the box and will be given the Android 4.2.2 update in the same month of release. The Galaxy S IV will also have a new camera feature called Samsung Orb (360 degree photo capturing a.k.a. Photosphere ), this feature has been rumored before. The device will have a 13 Megapixel camera and an Exynos Octa processor with 2GB of RAM. Samsung will also be using a new TouchWiz Nature UX (Nature UX 2.0?).

There are many prototypes of the Galaxy S IV, so it’s really difficult to get the exact specifications of the device. For example, prototype A uses Exynos Octa with Full HD GreenPHOLED / AMOLED display and prototype B uses SuperLCD3 with Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 etc…

Samsung will be announcing the Galaxy S IV on March 14th in New York, U.S. A live stream can be followed by Samsung Mobile on YouTube and Facebook. There is still no sign about any landings page or countdown page of the Galaxy S IV yet.

“There are many prototypes of the Galaxy S IV, so it’s really difficult to get the exact specifications of the device. For example, prototype A uses Exynos Octa with Full HD GreenPHOLED / AMOLED display and prototype B uses SuperLCD3 with Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 etc…” is very important as it explains a divergence between securities analysts who cover the oled supply chain to SMD (Duksan hi-metal, SFA Engineering, etc.) observing that orders to support oled green going into effect well before the release of the GS4. When you first reported on the GS4 using SuperLCD3 you left out the idea that it might be one of many prototypes …your exact heading was “BREAKING: Samsung ditches own AMOLED and EXYNOS inside new Galaxy S IV”. This was opposite of what the supply chain analysts had been discovering. Sadly it got the attention of investors of the only company that makes oled emitters for the GS phone series Universal Display. After your report over the weekend the stock went down about 20%… I ask you this… given that its only been a few days from your initial “breaking news”…that you find out that it indeed is using oled…that perhaps before printing a story that would have such a devastating effect on companies involved in the oled supply chain that you strongly consider being more informative about different prototypes existing and that elaborate on your certainty regarding a particular prototype becoming the final model. I greatly appreciate you releasing the update today explaining the subtleties of following the ongoing development of technologies for the GS4. This report today was far better than your first jump to conclusion breaking news story. Please consider how widely your stories get disseminated across the internet and into the hands of investors (both long and short) and that a breaking news story saying no oled will trigger an avalanche of new short sellers jumping on board to try to profit from the impact of the negative news on a company like UDC that relies upon SMD using oled in its phones as well as generate unnecessary fear among long holders of panl who may have sold on the news out of fear that SMD had decided to shift away from oled. Given the relative commitment of SMD toward oled development in its capex, I’m surprised more due diligence wasn’t done before printing your breaking news article. Please exercise more caution in the future and use this story today as a good example of why its important to dig a bit deeper before publishing an devastating piece toward a particular technology that impacts investors worldwide. Thanks again and keep us informed… just be more careful about sweeping conclusions.
